Thousands of people gathered in the streets of Damascus on the first Friday after the fall of the regime. UN Special Envoy: International Community Ready to Help Syria Peace and Security
UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen, who arrived in the capital on Sunday, stressed the importance of launching an inclusive political process in the interests of the Syrian population.
According to him, the key tasks for the interim government are the restoration of state institutions, provision of humanitarian aid and maintenance of law and order.
“Syria is experiencing a large-scale humanitarian crisis, and providing urgent aid to both people in the country and refugees seeking to return is a matter of paramount importance,” Pedersen noted.
He also emphasized the need to accelerate the economic recovery of Syria. When asked by journalists about his position on the lifting of sanctions, the Special Envoy clarified that this concerns measures imposed by the United States, the European Union and other countries, and added that it is necessary to build an orderly process on this issue.
In addition, Pedersen emphasized the importance of ensuring justice and accountability for war crimes, noting that the justice system must be independent and not subject to political pressure.
The UN Special Envoy also spoke about the talks that took place earlier in Aqaba, Jordan, and assured that the international community is ready to support Syria. In the near future, the UN plans to organize an international event to agree on further steps to restore the country and develop political dialogue.
