UN Secretariat building in New York. UN chief welcomes ceasefire between US and Iran Peace and Security
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomes the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran. It calls on all parties to the conflict in the Middle East to fulfill their obligations under international law and adhere to the terms of the ceasefire to pave the way for lasting and comprehensive peace in the region.
A statement released by the UN chief’s press office said that an urgent cessation of hostilities is necessary to protect civilians and alleviate their suffering.
Guterres also expressed his sincere gratitude for the efforts of Pakistan and other countries that contributed to the conclusion of the cessation regime fire.
The Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for the Middle East Conflict, Jean Arnault, is in the region to support efforts to secure lasting peace.
