Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza. UN ramps up health care for women and girls in Gaza Humanitarian assistance
At the Al Shifa Medical Complex during a tour of Palestine, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) representative Nestor Owomuhangi said the Fund would increase support for the people of the Gaza Strip, with a particular focus on providing health services to women and girls.
“We will continue to provide medical equipment and supplies to Gaza, as well as midwives, to ensure that pregnant and maternity services are provided despite difficult circumstances,” Ovomuhangi said.
The Fund currently supports 22 health facilities throughout the Gaza Strip, including five major hospitals.
Image from Al Shifa Hospital, filmed during the visit and distributed by UNFPA, shows the extent of the destruction of the hospital complex and its infrastructure. Despite the enormous damage to one of the sector’s largest hospitals, Al Shifa remains partially operational, providing life-saving health services.
In recent weeks, UNFPA has expanded its work in Gaza, coordinating the work of 175 midwives across the sector and continuing to ship medicines and medical equipment from around the world so that local health facilities can help all women and girls in Gaza in need of support.
