UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called “horrifying” reports that a series of Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip killed more than 100 Palestinians last night. According to available information, the victims were mainly sheltered in residential buildings, schools and camps for internally displaced persons. The strikes were carried out after the death of an Israeli soldier.

“The laws of war clearly indicate the paramount importance of protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure,” Turk said. “Israel is bound by its obligations under international humanitarian law and bears responsibility for any violations.”

The High Commissioner stressed that these tragic events occurred at a time when Gazans, who have endured two years of suffering, now have hope for an end to the violence.

The UN’s chief human rights defender reiterated that parties to the conflict must act in good faith to meet the conditions ceasefire. He also called on the international community, especially states with special influence on the situation, to do everything possible to ensure compliance with the agreements.

“The last two years have brought untold suffering and destruction, leading to the almost complete destruction of Gaza. We must not miss this chance for peace and the path to a more just and secure future,” Turk added.
