Delegations from more than one hundred countries, including about 60 ministers and 40 deputy ministers, will take part in the 16th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). UNCTAD Secretary-General Rebekah Greenspan announced this on Monday.

The forum, organized by Switzerland, will take place from October 20 to 23. Trade and finance ministers, heads of international organizations, Nobel laureates and leading economists will gather in Geneva to explore ways to make the global economy more predictable, inclusive and sustainable. 1,700 people have already registered to attend the forum.

“We will be joined by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, which will further highlight the importance of this event,” Greenspan said. “The largest UN trade conference in four years comes at a critical time for global trade and multilateral cooperation.”

Decisions made at the forum will influence the future of trade and global development policy, she said. It will be about how countries can cope with record levels of debt, supply chain disruptions, volatile investment flows and accelerating digital transformation.

“Development is not a luxury, but a necessity,” Greenspan said. “We need to restore confidence in the economy, and the global economy must work for the benefit of everyone.”
