The planned rotation of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team currently at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) on Thursday has been cancelled due to “intense military activity” in the region, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said.
According to him, despite written assurances from both sides that the planned rotation could take place in a safe environment, the situation proved too risky.
“I deeply regret today’s cancellation of a carefully prepared and agreed upon rotation of our staff, who are performing vital work in very difficult conditions to help prevent a nuclear accident during a military conflict. “It is completely unacceptable that the safety of our staff is being compromised in this way,” Grossi said.
“I am in active consultation with both sides to ensure the safety of our staff and to ensure the continued presence of the IAEA at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant so that our staff can continue to carry out their indispensable mission in helping to maintain nuclear safety,” the IAEA chief added.
