The UN Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Working Group will review the human rights situation in Kazakhstan this Thursday. The UPR Working Group’s meeting at the Palais des Nations in Geneva will be broadcast live. 

Kazakhstan is one of 14 countries to be reviewed by the UPR Working Group at its upcoming session from 20 to 31 January. The Working Group is comprised of 47 member states of the Human Rights Council. Any of the 193 UN member states may participate in the country review. 

The Universal Periodic Review is an expert assessment of the human rights situation in all 193 UN member states. Since its first meeting in April 2008, the Working Group has reviewed the situation in all UN member states three times. During the fourth cycle, national delegations will again report on the steps they have taken to implement the recommendations made during previous reviews and highlight recent human rights developments in their countries. 

The delegation of Kazakhstan will be headed by the Minister of Justice of that country, Erlan Sarsembayev. Bolivia, Gambia and Japan will serve as rapporteurs for the review of Kazakhstan.
