Death and destruction, new waves of displacement, power outages and water shortages – the beginning of the new year for Ukrainians is overshadowed by war. People have to live in unheated buildings and constantly hide from air raids. In the Kherson region alone, more than 60 buildings have been damaged since the beginning of the year.
The UN press service reported this on Tuesday, citing the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. According to the authorities and UN partners, the fighting in the first week of January resulted in hundreds of casualties, including children.
Over the past three days, residential buildings, gas facilities and other civilian infrastructure have been damaged in several frontline regions. People are freezing in unheated homes and enduring numerous hardships. “In the Kherson region alone, in the south of the country, more than 60 residential buildings were damaged,” the UN press service said in a statement.
The ongoing fighting has also caused a new wave of forced displacement. Since the beginning of the year, at least 1,600 people, including children, have fled frontline areas, mainly in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions. The local Ukrainian authorities informed the UN about this.
Despite the fact that due to the intense fighting in some frontline areas humanitarian access is limited, UN agencies and the organization’s partners continue to provide emergency aid to the population, as well as psychological support to civilians affected by the war.
