Hundreds of thousands without electricity

Hundreds of thousands of families in Kharkiv were left without electricity and heating, the UN Office said on Thursday. Humanitarian organizations mobilized support for victims, providing hot meals and materials for home repairs in cold weather.

Children affected

The UN Children’s Fund said Christmas was also marred by reports of attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk and Kherson regions, which injured children: two girls were wounded. Fourteen educational institutions and one medical facility were also damaged. Children and civilian infrastructure must be protected, UNICEF said.

Paddington Bear

On Christmas Eve, the children’s book and film character Paddington Bear arrived at Ukraine’s Central Railway Station – a symbolic place for him, as he began his journey to a caring foster family after getting off a train in London. Paddington visits Ukraine to support efforts to help children and families in the country.

“Paddington’s story demonstrates the transformative power of family. It reminds us that every child has the right to grow up in a safe, loving and supportive environment. UNICEF works with partners to help all children in Ukraine enjoy this right. Together with our partners, we are building a future where families are supported and all children can thrive,” said UNICEF Representative in Ukraine Munir Mammadzade.

The Ukraine for Every Child campaign promotes the importance of family, especially for vulnerable children. As part of this initiative, UNICEF is working to reform the child care system, which is at the heart of child-centred recovery efforts.
