UN OCHA Director of Operations Edem Wosornu. UN Headquarters Briefing: Human suffering in Ukraine has reached “unbearable levels” Peace and Security
Human suffering in Ukraine has reached “unbearable levels,” Edem Wosornu, the director of operations for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said at a humanitarian briefing at UN headquarters on Wednesday.
“Daily power outages have left millions of people without access to basic services. “The situation will only get worse in the winter,” the senior OCHA representative warned.
According to her, there are daily reports from Ukraine of damage to critical infrastructure, civilian casualties and significant destruction.
Edem Wosornu called on all parties to take measures to protect civilians, as required by international humanitarian law, and to avoid the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas.
The OCHA representative said that UN humanitarian workers face the greatest challenges when trying to provide assistance to civilians in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory.
“I call on all parties to ensure the rapid and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to all those in urgent need of it, in accordance with international humanitarian law,” Edem Wosornou said.
