Shelling of Ukraine

Dozens of civilians were killed and wounded in a shelling of a market in Kherson on Tuesday, UN humanitarian agencies reported, citing local authorities. UN Coordinator for Ukraine Matthias Schmale strongly condemned the attack and called for civilians to be spared from attacks. Also yesterday in Zaporizhia, according to authorities, dozens of civilians were injured in a bombing. Humanitarian organizations are supporting the response in both regions. Meanwhile, in Sumy Oblast, due to the fierce fighting, a mandatory evacuation of children from 90 towns and villages was announced.

Security Council on the Middle East

The situation in the Middle East, which was already developing in a dangerous direction, has worsened significantly in the last few days, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told members of the UN Security Council on Wednesday. He spoke at a meeting convened by France in connection with the “dramatic escalation” in the region. Every escalation in the Middle East, including the current one, serves as a prologue to the next, Guterres warned. The head of the UN recalled that the day before Iran launched about 200 ballistic missiles towards Israel, and once again strongly condemned this massive strike.

UN Deputy Secretary-General in Baku

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed will visit Azerbaijan to participate in the preparatory meeting for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP-29) on October 10 and 11. The conference itself, we recall, will be held in Baku from November 11 to 22. Mohammed will meet with delegations of member states participating in this event. While in Baku, she will also meet with senior officials from the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan to discuss progress in the negotiations on the outcome documents of COP29.

Alcohol and Health

Alcohol causes one in 11 deaths in the World Health Organization European Region. Alcohol consumption is linked to more than 200 diseases, including at least seven types of cancer. Yet despite these serious health risks, less than half of Europeans know about them. Now, as the world observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, WHO draws attention to the fact that only 21 percent of women in 14 European countries know that alcohol consumption can lead to breast cancer.
