Destruction after strike on Kharkov (archive). Ukraine: UN condemns strikes on hospital in Sumy Peace and Security
The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, issued a statement on Saturday condemning the attack in Sumy, where civilians were killed and injured as a result of shelling of a hospital.
“I am devastated by the reports of strikes by the Russian Armed Forces on a hospital in the city of Sumy, located in northeastern Ukraine,” Schmale said. According to him, several people were killed and injured in the attack. The UN representative stressed that medical facilities must remain safe places under all circumstances and be protected from “such ruthless acts of violence.”
The hospital was shelled twice in one day. The second strike added to the suffering of patients and staff who were wounded in the attack earlier on Saturday.
“Attacks on the wounded and those assisting them are prohibited by international humanitarian law,” Schmale stressed. “Civilians and civilian infrastructure must not be targeted!”
