French President addresses General Assembly delegates. Macron: France will do everything possible to ensure that Ukraine can stand firm UN
The fate of Ukraine is a matter of peace and security in Europe and around the world, and France will continue to do everything possible to ensure that Ukraine can stand firm, French President Emmanuel Macron said at the general debate in the UN General Assembly.
Support for Ukraine
According to Macron, after Russia’s invasion, countries are no longer confident that they are protected from their neighbors, which are larger than them.
Therefore, it is in our common interest and the common interest of the peoples that Ukraine be restored to its legitimate rights as soon as possible, and that a just and lasting peace be built.
“France will continue to supply it with the equipment it needs for its defense,” the French leader said.
Macron stressed that France is ready to join forces with all partners to support Ukraine.
Armenia and Azerbaijan
Touching upon Azerbaijan and Armenia, Macron called on the international community to ensure the success of peace talks and to ensure the preservation of internationally recognized borders.
Middle East
Speaking about the escalation in the Middle East, Macron stressed that the war in Lebanon is unacceptable.
“We call on Israel to stop the escalation in Lebanon and we call on Hezbollah to stop launching rockets at Israel. We call on all those who provide them with the means to do this to stop,” Macron said.
He stressed that Israel cannot expand its operations in Lebanon “without consequences.”
Macron recalled that, at the initiative of France, a meeting of the UN Security Council on the situation in Lebanon will be held today.
Reform of the Security Council
Macron also called on those who criticize the UN to do so in a constructive manner.
“Is there a better system?? I don’t think so. So let’s make the UN more effective,” the president said.
He spoke about the need to expand the Security Council. According to Macron, Germany, Japan, India, Brazil, and two African countries should become its permanent members.
However, replenishing the Security Council is not enough, Macron believes. In particular, he proposed limiting the veto power in cases involving the commission of mass crimes.
