The United Nations has once again reminded of the need to protect civilians in Ukraine from the consequences of military action. The statement came amid an escalation of Russian attacks across the country. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), at least seven people were killed in Lviv on Wednesday. The shelling of Poltava the day before left dozens dead.

“Over the past few weeks, we have seen an increase in attacks on civilians and public infrastructure,” the WHO said in a statement posted on the social network X.

A “brutal attack” in Lviv, where many internally displaced people from other parts of the country live, has killed at least seven people and injured 64 others, including ten children, the UN press service said, citing local authorities. More than 50 residential buildings, as well as at least four educational institutions and one medical facility, were damaged.

The shelling of Kryvyi Rih also resulted in civilian casualties, including children, and damage to civilian infrastructure. 

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warns that “indiscriminate attacks on children and schools have marred the start of the new school year” for young Ukrainians.

Immediately after the attacks, humanitarian workers organized medical and psychological assistance to the victims.

The attack on Lviv took place the day after a missile strike on the military academy and At least 50 people were killed and more than 270 injured in a nearby hospital in Poltava. The attack was one of the deadliest since Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country began in February 2022.

The UN humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, was in Poltava on Wednesday, where he arrived from Kharkiv, another city under fire. “The attacks have resulted in the destruction of civilian infrastructure, including many educational and health facilities. “It’s just disgusting to see civilian infrastructure being destroyed,” the UN official said.

Shmale said he “shocked and outraged” by the deaths of civilians, including children. “No one should die. No one should suffer,” the Humanitarian Coordinator said. “I reiterate the UN’s call to respect international humanitarian law and do everything possible to ensure the safety of civilians and protect critical civilian infrastructure.”
