The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine Matthias Schmale spent several hours today in a shelter, hiding from the massive shelling of Ukrainian territory by the Russian Armed Forces.
“Like millions of people in Ukraine, I spent several hours in shelter this morning due to the ongoing wave of attacks on Ukraine by the Russian Armed Forces,” he said in a statement published on Monday.
The strikes reportedly killed and injured civilians and caused serious damage to civilian infrastructure, writes Shmale.
“It is unacceptable that instead of living their lives, citizens of this country [Ukraine] are forced to hide from shelling in metro stations and other shelters,” said the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine.
Even during military actions, the rules adopted by the international community must be observed, he recalled. “International humanitarian law must be respected. The civilian population must be protected,” the UN representative emphasized.
