Kishinev, Moldova. Moldova: UN Committee warns of discrimination against Roma in education Human Rights

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has expressed concern about discrimination, stereotyping and hate speech, as well as hate crimes against members of ethnic minorities, in particular Roma, in Moldova.

The committee published its findings on Monday on the situation in a number of countries, including Moldova. Experts presented recommendations for the implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

They expressed their alarm at the low school attendance among children from Roma communities, especially girls. Experts noted that Roma children often drop out of school. However, only one Roma teacher works in public schools in Moldova, the report says.

Committee members called on the Government of Moldova to step up efforts to ensure Roma children have access to quality and inclusive education and improve school attendance rates. Such measures include awareness-raising campaigns on the importance of learning among Roma children and young people and their families, and the recruitment of more teachers from ethnic communities.

In addition, the Committee recommended that Moldova make efforts to introduce a legislative framework to combat discrimination, racist speech and hate crimes against members of ethnic minorities, including Roma.
