The UN today expressed hope that the family will be able to receive the body of Alexei Navalny, who died last Friday in a Russian penal colony.
This was stated by UN official representative Stephane Dujarric, answering a journalist’s question. The UN spokesman recalled the statement he issued on Friday on behalf of the UN Secretary-General, as well as comments from the UN Human Rights Office. The UN, we recall, demanded a thorough and independent investigation into the circumstances of the death of Alexei Navalny.

“It is obvious that, as previously noted our fellow human rights defenders, the state bears an increased responsibility for those who are in prison,” Dujarric emphasized. “We really hope that this problem will be resolved in the near future.” In any case, relatives should receive the bodies of their loved ones.”
Meanwhile, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya on Monday commented on the information that Alexei Navalny’s family cannot receive his body. “It’s very simple,” said the diplomat, “the forensic medical examination has not yet been completed, the exact cause of death has not been made public.” Nebenzya criticized the position of “Western colleagues,” who “15 minutes after the news [of Navalny’s death] appeared, hastened to blame the Putin regime.”
