Speaking to the UN Security Council on Wednesday, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding Khaled Khiari expressed grave concern over the recent launch of a ballistic missile by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the DPRK’s ongoing military buildup.

On Monday, the DPRK launched a medium-range ballistic missile equipped with a hypersonic glide vehicle. In its official statement, the DPRK claimed that the missile “moved along a pre-set flight path at 12 times the speed of sound and fell into the open sea.” However, Pyongyang failed to comply with its obligations to notify about the safety of air and sea space before the test.

“The launch of another ballistic missile by the DPRK is a matter of grave concern,” Khaled Khiari said. “This is the fourth test of a medium-range missile since the beginning of 2024, along with the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, several tests of short-range missiles and an attempt to launch a military reconnaissance satellite.”

The UN Assistant Secretary-General stressed that these actions are a clear violation of Security Council resolutions, adding that such activity undermines the global nuclear disarmament regime and increases international tensions.
