UN Secretary-General: “Even in our darkest days, I see reasons to hope in our ability to make change.” UN Secretary-General congratulates the world on the upcoming 2025 UN
“There are no guarantees about what 2025 holds, but I am committed to supporting all those who are working to build a more peaceful, equal, stable and healthy future for all people,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in his New Year’s video message.
According to António Guterres, it was extremely difficult to find reasons for hope in 2024: wars cause “incredible pain and suffering” and lead to massive displacement of populations; inequality and discord are widespread, exacerbating tensions and mistrust.
“Today, I can officially report that we have just survived a decade of deadly heat,” the UN chief said. “The last 10 years, including 2024, have seen the 10 hottest years on record. This is a climate catastrophe, and it is unfolding in real time.”
According to António Guterres, humanity must turn away from the path to destruction, and there is not a minute to lose. In 2025, he said, countries must put the world on a safer path by drastically cutting emissions and supporting the transition to a future of renewable energy.
Even in my darkest days, I see reasons to be hopeful about our ability to make a difference
“Even in my darkest days, I see reasons to be hopeful about our ability to make a difference,” the UN chief continued. “I take hope from activists of all ages raising their voices for progress. In September, I was inspired by the world leaders who came together to adopt the Pact for the Future.”
According to António Guterres, the Pact gives new impetus to build peace through disarmament and prevention; reform the global financial system to support and represent all countries; and remain true at all times to the values and principles enshrined in human rights, international law and the Charter of the United Nations.”
Together, we can ensure that 2025 marks a new beginning, the UN Secretary-General concluded.
