In his message for International Migrants Day, celebrated on 18 December, UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed the contribution that people moving in search of a better life make to communities, economies and the prosperity of countries around the world.
However, despite this significant contribution, migrants face many challenges, including discrimination, violence, exploitation and human trafficking. The Secretary-General noted that these challenges are exacerbated by the spread of misinformation and hate speech that fuels hatred and distorts reality.
In his message, he also recalled the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, adopted six years ago, which offers concrete measures to protect the rights of migrants at all stages of their movement.
In addition, the UN chief noted that in the recently adopted Pact for the Future, countries recommitted themselves to strengthen international cooperation and partnerships to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration.
“Let us today and always uphold the rights of all migrants and work to build safe, humane and inclusive migration systems,” the UN Secretary-General said Secretary.
