The UN Secretary-General called on participants in all armed conflicts on Earth to lay down their arms in the spirit of the Olympic Truce. The corresponding statement was made in a video message that Antonio Guterres timed to coincide with the upcoming opening of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris.
According to the head of the UN, in these days and weeks it is necessary to build bridges, strengthen solidarity and strive for the ultimate goal – peace for all.
“Peace gathered in Paris to celebrate the power of sport, the message said, to give hope, to unite cultures and people, and to promote mutual respect and fair play. All these are also the ideals of the United Nations.”
António Guterres wished the Olympians and Paralympians every success. “You inspire us to dream big,” he added. “Let the Olympic flame illuminate the path to peace and harmony.”
