“Anti-Semitism is a toxic ideology with deep roots in bigotry and racism.” UN announces launch of Action Plan to Strengthen Monitoring of Anti-Semitism UN
UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Alliance of Civilizations Miguel Moratinos announced the launch of the United Nations Action Plan to Strengthen Monitoring of and Response to Anti-Semitism on Friday.
The Action Plan, led by the Secretary-General, is the result of efforts undertaken by the UN chief in recent months in collaboration with several parts of the Organization.
“Anti-Semitism is a toxic ideology with deep roots in bigotry and racism,” Moratinos said in presenting the Action Plan. “Eighty years have passed since the Holocaust, but anti-Semitism still persists in many parts of the world. It is our collective responsibility to eradicate anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry, hatred and discrimination.”
According to the UN Deputy Secretary-General, efforts to counter anti-Semitism, as well as all other manifestations of extremism and incitement to religious hatred and violence, will benefit from a comprehensive approach involving all stakeholders, including state and non-state actors.
Miguel Moratinos recalled that the United Nations has long been actively combating anti-Semitism. The current Action Plan, he said, aims to develop an even more coordinated and effective response to manifestations of anti-Semitism.
“Let us fight anti-Semitism together and move together towards a safe and inclusive future for our entire human family,” Moratinos urged in concluding his speech. “There is no place for prejudice and hatred in today’s society. We must not rest until we have rid ourselves of them forever.”
