The fifty-seventh regular session of the UN Human Rights Council opens at the Palais des Nations in Geneva next week. Over the course of five weeks, 50 country situations and more than 80 thematic reports will be considered.

The session will run from 9 September to 11 October and will be chaired by Ambassador Omar Zniber of Morocco. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk will address the opening session on Monday.

During the session, the Council will hold 30 interactive dialogues with independent experts, working groups and investigative mechanisms. Council members will also discuss with the High Commissioner the situations in Nicaragua, Myanmar, Ukraine, Honduras and Haiti. 

The Council will hold an expanded interactive dialogue on Afghanistan, the DR Congo and Sudan, as well as on advancing racial justice and equality in policing. In addition, the session will feature six panel discussions, including on inequality, education, development, family rights, indigenous peoples and gender. 

Presentation of country and thematic reports by the Secretary-General will also be heard, including his report on reprisals against those seeking or having cooperated with the United Nations. 

HRC members will be presented with reports on the human rights situation in a number of countries, including Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine. The final outcomes of the universal periodic review of 14 States will also be considered.  At the end of the session, the Council will appoint four independent experts and elect four members of its Advisory Committee.
