The opening ceremony of the International Year of Peace and Trust was held at the UN headquarters in New York on Friday. This initiative is aimed at strengthening dialogue and cooperation among nations.

The event, organized by the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan, was attended by high-ranking UN officials, including UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenca and General Assembly President Philemon Young.

Deputy Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Ata Eyeberdyev emphasized the importance of the International Year of Peace and Trust for his country. This year marks 30 years since Turkmenistan declared permanent neutrality, which was enshrined in UN General Assembly resolutions in 1995 and 2005.

“Over the past three decades, our commitment to neutrality has served as the basis for promoting peace, trust and constructive international cooperation,” the Turkmen diplomat noted.

The International Year of Peace and Trust was proclaimed during the 78th session of the General Assembly at the initiative of Turkmenistan. The corresponding resolution was supported by 86 countries.

The representative of Turkmenistan quoted the famous Turkmen poet and philosopher Makhtumkuli Fragi: “Let the world be filled with harmony, let the hearts of people unite as one…” These words, in his opinion, remind us of the importance of unity and understanding in building a peaceful global community.

A number of events are planned to be held within the framework of the International Year of Peace and Trust, including a high-level meeting to promote existing regional peace zones and the Inter-Parliamentary Forum on Peace and Trust in Turkmenistan.

In conclusion, Eyeberdyev emphasized that Turkmenistan is proud that the International Forum on Peace and Trust will be held in Ashgabat in December 2025, which will bring together participants from all over the world to consolidate progress and develop further steps to strengthen the global culture of peace.

“Today, we reaffirm our commitment to close cooperation with all UN Member States, international organizations, academia, civil society and other stakeholders,” he said.
