This morning, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke at a Global Call event to mark the upcoming Future Summit, which will be held in New York on 22-23 September.

The meeting was hosted by Namibia and Germany, which are also co-hosting the intergovernmental negotiations on the Pact for the Future.

UN Member States are currently in the final stages of negotiations on three agreements to be adopted at the Summit – the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration for Future Generations.

In his speech, the Secretary-General called on countries to actively pursue meaningful reforms and decisive action. The UN chief stressed that delegates must show maximum resolve in the final days of talks to overcome global challenges.

The Secretary-General added that the Future Summit is an opportunity to adopt long-term agreements on international cooperation for a safer, more sustainable and more just world.

He called on UN member states to act quickly, boldly, in a spirit of solidarity and compromise to bring the three draft agreements to the finish line and to make the most of this opportunity to move towards more effective multilateralism in the 21st century.
