IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi speaks at IAEA Board of Governors meeting. IAEA chief: situation at Zaporizhzhya NPP remains ‘extremely difficult’ Peace and security
The situation at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant remains extremely difficult. This was stated by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi on Monday, speaking at a meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.
The head of the agency recalled the fire that broke out on August 11 in one of the cooling towers of the station. According to him, IAEA experts continue to assess the current situation at the Zaporizhzhya NPP and related technical aspects.

Grossi briefly spoke about his recent visit to the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. “I familiarized myself with the state of affairs [at this NPP] and tried to convey to people the idea that nuclear safety is paramount and that no nuclear power plant, wherever it is, should be a military target, should not be the object of any attack or use for military purposes,” the IAEA chief emphasized.

The IAEA Director General also said that he “looks forward” to resuming his engagement with the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. “As you know, we have exchanged correspondence with the new president, who seems to be very constructive and open to engagement,” Grossi said. “We must get to know each other, try to understand and listen to each other.”
