The result of the shelling of Kharkov. (Archive) Ukraine: UN Humanitarian Coordinator Shocked by Today’s Russian Strikes on Residential Areas of Kharkov International Law
UN Humanitarian Coordinator Matthias Schmale said he was shocked by reports of attacks by Russian forces that killed and injured civilians, including children, in residential areas of Kharkiv today.
According to media reports, at least six people were killed and more than 50 were injured as a result of Russian strikes. Children were among the dead and injured. A playground and a multi-story building were damaged, and a fire broke out on the upper floors of the building.
“Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected in accordance with international humanitarian law,” said Schmale.
The new UN Humanitarian Coordinator Matthias Schmale took up his duties in mid-August. He succeeds Denise Brown.
Previously, Schmale served as a senior adviser at the United Nations Development Coordination Office and has held several positions at the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNRWA), the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and other humanitarian and development organizations.
