The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) is deeply concerned about the introduction of a legislative amendment in Bulgaria that bans discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools, OHCHR spokesperson Liz Throssell said.

The Office calls on the Bulgarian authorities to review this legislation in accordance with the country’s international obligations in the field of human rights.  “Combating stigma and misinformation is critical to promoting acceptance and tolerance, and building inclusive societies that respect and support human rights for all,” said Throssell.

According to her statement, 82 percent of LGBT people in Bulgaria report being bullied at school, and the new amendment will only worsen violations of their rights, as well as bullying and harassment in educational institutions.

The amendment also contradicts Bulgaria’s constitutional guarantees and obligations under international human rights treaties to ensure equality, non-discrimination and freedom of expression, OHCHR noted.

By Throssell said it was critical that Bulgarian authorities take urgent action to prevent and combat violence, discrimination and bullying, particularly against LGBT youth and within the education system.
