Destroyed buildings in Donetsk (archive). Escalation in the Donetsk region of Ukraine: 30 civilians injured Peace and Security
The UN Office of Humanitarian Affairs reports that over the past 24 hours, the escalation of hostilities in the Donetsk region, in eastern Ukraine, has led to another wave of forced displacement.
Local authorities report 30 civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure. The city of Pokrovsk was particularly hard hit, having been subjected to repeated shelling over the past week. UN and partner humanitarian workers on the ground report damage to several homes and a school building.
UN and partners are providing essential emergency assistance to local communities, including providing supplies to repair damaged structures, and provide psychological and legal support to those injured in the attacks.
The UN warns that the situation is worsening as heavy fighting continues. Authorities report that since last week, more than 1,500 people have left the front-line towns of Chasov Yar and Toretsk.
