Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant UN General Assembly Adopts Resolution on Safety of Nuclear Facilities in Ukraine Peace and Security
Members of the General Assembly today adopted a resolution on the technical and physical safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine, including the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant. The document, co-authored by dozens of states, was supported by 99 countries, 9 delegations voted against it and 60 abstained.
The authors of the resolution reaffirm their commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, including its territorial waters.
Having adopted the document , The UN General Assembly demanded that the Russian Federation immediately “cease its aggression against Ukraine and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of this country within its internationally recognized borders.”
The document also demands that the Russian Federation urgently withdraw its military personnel and other unauthorized personnel from the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and immediately return the plant to full control of Ukraine.
The authors also note with condemnation that the Russian Federation does not comply with the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the General Conference and the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In addition, the General Assembly called on Russia to immediately cease attacks on Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure, which, as the document notes, “increases the risk of a nuclear accident or incident at all nuclear facilities” of the country.
The document also welcomes the efforts of the IAEA Director General aimed at eliminating the “risks caused by the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine” for nuclear safety. NPP until the station is returned to full control of Ukraine, as well as immediately eliminate all anti-personnel mines installed along the perimeter of the Zaporizhia NPP territory.
The authors of the resolution confirm that no territorial acquisition in as a result of the threat or use of force cannot be recognized as lawful. They “in the strongest possible terms” condemn the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the occupation of part of the territory of Ukraine, including the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, as well as certain areas of the Kherson, Zaporozhye, Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
The resolution notes that the attempt to illegally annex these regions has no legal force in accordance with international law and is not the basis for any change in the status of these regions of Ukraine. The full text of the resolution is here.
