Sixteen -year -old Dania with the representative of UNICEF, Janan Ramadan. “We must continue to support Ukrainians”: the representative of the unisef – about the consequences of the blow to the sums Humanitarian assistance The head of the UN children’s office (UNICEF) & NBSP; in Kharkov – who also supports the residents of the Sumy region – Dzhinan Ramadan visited Sumy after a destructive attack, which died and suffered dozens of civilians, including children. In an interview with Evgenia Kleshcheva from the UN news service, she talked about what she saw at the place of the tragedy, about the injured families, the heroism of adolescents, the efforts of the unisef & nbsp; and the needs of the population & nbsp; Ukraine. 62 > 62 > 62 > 62 > EC: & nbsp; you just returned from the city of Sumy, which & nbsp; survived destructive attacks. Please tell us that the locals cope with the consequences of the blows ?~ 60 >~ 60 > Dzhinan Ramadan: We talked & nbsp; with some young patients and their relatives. Since UNICEF has a mandate for supporting & nbsp; children & nbsp; and their guardians, we went there to see the situation with our own eyes. We witnessed the heartbreaking situation in which the families found themselves. Among the injuries – & nbsp; many acute fragmentation wounds. Some wounds immediately & nbsp; others are visible, hidden under bandages and dressings on different & nbsp; parts of the body. Two -year -old Lisa with her parents in the Sumy children’s hospital. Some families with whom we talked were extremely emotional. It was only worth starting to talk about the incident or express support – & nbsp; for example, to say how & nbsp; we are glad that they are alive and sound, & nbsp; and that we are ready & nbsp; help – & nbsp; as they started to cry. Most of the victims still experience the consequences of severe injury and experience stress. For us, UNICEF, it was important to personally assess the situation on the spot in order to understand how we can help these families. They suffered & nbsp; children of different ages. For example, we visited & nbsp; a very sweet two -year -old girl named Lisa, who suffered in & nbsp; course & nbsp; attacks. She was in one of the buses, which was hit in the city center. Her mother was with her. Lisa has & nbsp; many cuts on her face, but, despite this, she smiled and rejoiced at our visit – after all, we brought gifts. We try to always find an approach to children. She even played with us. ~ 60 > but on the faces of her mother and father the emotional stress was visible – & nbsp; and great relief that Lisa was alive, because & nbsp; everything & nbsp; could be much worse. There are many similar cases. ~ 60 > one of especially remembered – & nbsp; teenager named Cyril. Cyril went through the city center with his mother. He became & nbsp; a real hero: he did not run away after the first blow, but on the contrary – & nbsp; I ran to help others, pulled out people from the bus. he showed great courage. He told us: “I could not leave. I had to help others. ” Cyril received injuries – & nbsp; he has a bandaged & nbsp; head and hands. And this is not the only case of heroism & nbsp; among children and adolescents. Thirteen -year -old Cyril helped people get out of the bus hit. ek: & nbsp; what priorities do unitsf and what support are you now Provide ?~ 60 > Dzhinan Ramadan: & NBSP; Usually, in emergency situations, UNICEF has local partners. When an attack occurs, we direct the quick response commands that deliver emergency materials and provide first aid. In addition, brigades for the provision of first psychological assistance go to the place. At this stage, the injury is still very fresh, and we try to support the victims as much as possible. If you need medical care, we help with a referral to relevant institutions, coordinating with partners in the field. ~ 60 > after the first phase of the response, we provide the affected families with sets & nbsp; essentials, as well as specialized psychosocial support through our partners. In addition, & nbsp; we provide assistance in the form of cash payments for children and their families. ~ 60 > eK: & nbsp; and what support & nbsp; now it is especially necessary from the international community ? that It is necessary to unisef ?~ 60 > janan Ramadan: & nbsp; needs are huge. As for immediate assistance – & nbsp; as you know, attacks cause serious damage to civilian infrastructure. Most residential buildings were damaged in place – & nbsp; windows are knocked out, walls were destroyed. In particular, Sumy & nbsp; state & nbsp; university. This is a civilian institution that served as a site for meetings, cultural and educational events. Now it is badly damaged. Restoring houses takes a lot of time, and local authorities physically do not have time to repair them quickly enough. In such situations, temporary shelters, medical services, and emergency support for families are needed. But our experience over the past two years shows that psychological help is especially needed. Financial assistance is also extremely important, because many families suffered themselves or lost housing. ~ 60 > for us the priority of the needs & nbsp; children and their guardians: we provide funds, sets of first necessity – & nbsp; including special hygiene sets for children And the whole family. All & nbsp; this is accompanied by psychological support and cash payments, which are an important part of our services. ~ 60 >~ 60 > ek: what else is important Add ?~ 60 > Dzhinan Ramadan: & k & nbsp; Unfortunately, quantity Deadly attacks in the east of Ukraine are only growing. Sumy is one of the cities that are most often & nbsp; they are blocked. When & nbsp; we were there today, there was another missile shelling – & nbsp; next to the site of yesterday’s attack. 62 ~~ 60 > this is not a single case. Such attacks & nbsp; occur almost daily in different regions of Eastern Ukraine and throughout the country. I would like to & nbsp; emphasize: all agencies must continue to support Ukrainian residents and focus on & nbsp; needs & nbsp; civilian population. ~ 60 > 62 ~
