View of Beirut, Lebanon. UN Special Coordinator on Lebanese Presidential Elections Peace and Security
The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, congratulates Joseph Aoun on his election as President of the Lebanese Republic. This is stated in a statement released today by her press office.
The Special Coordinator welcomes the election of the President as a long-awaited first step towards overcoming the political and institutional crisis in the country, as well as towards providing the Lebanese people with functioning state institutions.
“A Prime Minister must be appointed without delay and a government formed. The tasks facing the Lebanese state are too monumental to waste time,” Hennis-Plasschaert emphasized. “Now is the moment for every decision maker to put the interests of Lebanon above all personal or political considerations.”
The presidential election offers new hope for progress in ending the fighting and maintaining security and stability in the country, including by strengthening state authority throughout Lebanon and advancing comprehensive and sustainable reforms, the statement said. The United Nations looks forward to working with the President and the relevant authorities to support Lebanon in its efforts in this regard.
