Monitor environmental change and contribute to climate research more effectively than ever. 75 years: WMO kicks off anniversary year with groundbreaking Earth data exchange system Climate and Environment
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) today launched the WMO Information System 2.0 (WIS 2.0), which will facilitate international cooperation and change the way countries share data. WIS 2.0 makes it easier, more efficient and cost-effective to share information at the international, regional and national levels. The system will be operational from 1 January 2025.
Real-time data sharing underpins improved weather forecasts, facilitates global cooperation, supports early warning systems, aids climate research, delivers significant economic and social benefits, and facilitates monitoring. The technical platform is based on open standards and web technologies that make the system easy to access.
“With WIS 2.0, we are ushering in an era where predicting and preparing for weather events, monitoring environmental changes, and engaging in climate research will be more effective than ever,” said WMO spokesman Enrico Fucile.
“This success shows how international cooperation can make a real difference in solving global problems. Together, we support key international initiatives such as Early Warning for All and ensure that modern data sharing technologies are available to all countries, including developing countries, least developed countries and small island developing states,” he added.
WIS 2.0 builds on the legacy of the Global Telecommunication System, established in 1971, by facilitating more inclusive and efficient sharing of data on the atmosphere, oceans, water resources and the cryosphere.
The launch of the new system is an important step in the celebration of WMO’s 75th anniversary as a specialized agency of the United Nations.
