UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres mourns the death of James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr., the 39th President of the United States. In a statement issued on his behalf by the UN press service, the head of the organization expressed condolences to the Carter family and the American people.
Guterres noted that President Carter’s activities made a significant contribution to strengthening international peace and security, especially emphasizing his role in the conclusion of the Camp David Accords, the SALT II Treaty and the Panama Canal Treaty.
“President Carter’s commitment to international peace and human rights was fully demonstrated after the end of his presidential term,” the document says. – He played a key role in conflict resolution, election monitoring, democracy promotion, and disease prevention and eradication efforts.”

The UN Secretary-General recalls that Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work on behalf of humanity. These efforts, the UN chief added, also contributed to the work of the United Nations.
Antonio Guterres is convinced that President Carter will be remembered for his services to society, his belief in the common good and humanity, and his solidarity with the most vulnerable. “His legacy as a peacemaker, a defender of human rights and a humanitarian will live on forever,” the UN chief stressed.
