The General Assembly on Tuesday wrapped up the main part of its 79th session, approving a $3.72 billion UN budget for 2025 and a new program to support landlocked developing countries.

The adopted amount of $3.72 billion is about $1 million higher than the budget proposed by the Secretary-General in October to the Assembly’s Fifth Committee, which deals with administrative and budgetary matters.

The regular budget funds UN programmes in key areas, including political affairs, international law and justice, regional development, human rights and humanitarian affairs. Peacekeeping operations are supported under a separate budget.

By a separate decision, the General Assembly adopted the Programme of Action for Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) for 2024-2034, which aims to address the unique challenges faced by these States.

The Programme of Action identifies five priorities:
1. Promoting sustainable economic growth through innovation and structural transformation;
2. Strengthening regional integration in trade;
3. Improving transport connectivity;
4. Strengthening resilience to climate change;
5. Providing effective strategies for implementing solutions.
