The Human Rights Council has elected Ambassador Jürg Lauber, Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations Office at Geneva, as its President for 2025.

The Council also elected Ambassadors Tarek Md. Ariful Islam of Bangladesh (Asia-Pacific Group), Razvan Rusu of Romania (Eastern European Group) and Paul Empole Losoko Efambe of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (African Group) as Vice-Presidents for next year. A fourth Vice-President will be elected later from the Latin American and Caribbean Group.

“By advancing human rights, we create a more just world. “By defending human rights, we defend our future,” said the outgoing President of the Council, Omar Zniber of Morocco.

He stressed that the Human Rights Council is an important instrument of multilateralism and a forum for discussing differences.

Addressing the delegates of the 47 countries that make up the Council, Ambassador Lauber said: “I am very grateful to you for electing me as the 19th President of the Human Rights Council and I look forward to accompanying you on this journey in 2025.”

“I bring with me the values ​​of a multilingual, multi-religious, multicultural country that embodies the values ​​of democracy, dialogue and consensus,” he added, stressing that Switzerland has played an important role in Advice.
