Ashgabat city center, Turkmenistan. UNECE to help Turkmenistan reduce emissions and expand clean energy Economic development
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) supports Turkmenistan’s efforts to reduce methane emissions and achieve an energy transition in line with global climate goals. The issue of cooperation was discussed this week at a meeting between the UNECE leadership and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
The discussions focused on the Turkmenistan Alliance for Global Energy Security and Sustainable Development Cooperation, an initiative put forward by the Government of Turkmenistan at the World Government Summit and supported at the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.
The initiative aims to create a global framework for cooperation on energy security, with a particular focus on the transition to sustainable energy systems. The Alliance aims to pool resources, expertise and innovative technologies to address energy transition challenges and expand access to energy. UNECE expressed its support for the initiative and its readiness to facilitate cooperation between governments, international organizations and the private sector.
The meeting also considered concrete steps to build the renewable energy potential in Turkmenistan, with a particular focus on solar and wind energy projects. Turkmenistan, with its vast natural resources and favorable climate, has significant untapped potential for the development of green energy.
UNECE will provide the country with technical expertise to assist in the planning, development and implementation of large-scale renewable energy projects. These projects will be supported by innovative energy storage and transmission solutions, enabling Turkmenistan to address the challenges posed by the variability of renewable energy sources and ensure reliable energy supply.
UNECE’s cooperation with Turkmenistan in this area is expected to play a key role in advancing the country’s energy diversification strategy, contributing to both national energy security and the achievement of its long-term climate goals.
In addition to expanding the use of renewable energy, the meeting also discussed methane emissions management, which plays a key role in reducing emissions. Addressing this challenge in energy production is a priority for Turkmenistan, and UNECE can provide the necessary support to the country, including in developing effective systems for monitoring, reporting and verification of methane, as well as strategies to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector, especially from oil and gas production.
UNECE technical assistance will help Turkmenistan modernize its energy infrastructure, improve energy efficiency and reduce its environmental impact using innovations and clean energy technologies.
