The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported on Friday new shelling in Ukraine and civilian casualties. Dozens of civilians were killed, homes, schools and a hospital were damaged in the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson and Sumy regions. The UN and partners are providing emergency assistance to the victims and helping with evacuations.

The latest developments in the areas of Ukraine affected by the fighting were reported on Friday by UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, citing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and local Ukrainian authorities.

“As intense fighting continues, we continue to support the affected communities with our humanitarian partners,” he stressed.  In the Kharkiv region, people left homeless by the shelling were provided with water and food, as well as assistance with housing restoration.

According to a new report published by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, between March 22 and August 31 this year, nine large-scale attacks were carried out in 20 regions of the country, damaging key energy infrastructure facilities and causing widespread disruptions to electricity, water, heating and utilities. “Our humanitarian colleagues note that this is particularly alarming as the winter season approaches,” Dujarric added.
