Wine tourism is becoming increasingly popular. UN Global Conference on Wine Tourism Opens in Yerevan Culture and Education

The UN Global Conference on Wine Tourism opened in Yerevan on Wednesday. Its participants will discuss how this type of tourism can preserve and revive the cultural traditions of countries and create new economic opportunities for local communities.

“Wine tourism continues to grow, both in terms of popularity among tourists and as a pillar of rural development and a protector of cultural heritage,” said Zurab Pololikashvili, head of the World Tourism Organization, which co-organized the conference with Armenia’s Economy Ministry.

“The Global Wine Tourism Conference will once again bring together the brightest leaders in the sector, and I look forward to welcoming them all to Yerevan,” Pololikashvili said before the opening of the meeting.

As Susanna Hakobyan, Acting Head of the Tourism Committee of Armenia, emphasized, thanks to the thousand-year-old traditions of winemaking, her country is in a unique position to showcase its innovative practices and wine culture.

“This conference offers a unique platform for collaboration, learning, and advancing the global discourse on wine tourism,” Hakobyan said.

The meeting in Yerevan will be a platform for exchanging experiences and developing innovative projects. Representatives from iconic wine regions including Strada del Barolo (Italy), Burgundy (France) and Mendoza (Argentina) will share examples of best practice.

Delegates will explore strategies for attracting tourists, as well as encouraging coordinated efforts among stakeholders to effectively promote wine routes and maximise their positive impact on local economies and communities.

The conference will feature industry leaders such as Argentina’s Catena Zapata, named World’s Best Winery in 2023. Participants will have the opportunity to attend master classes at famous Armenian wineries, such as the historic Areni-1 Cave, the oldest known winery in the world.

Panel discussion topics will range from applying e-commerce strategies in wine tourism to integrating technology into ecotourism. The meeting will run until September 13.
