WFP distributes food and cash aid to residents of Ukraine. WFP provides cash aid to Ukrainian pensioners Humanitarian aid
Almost half a million pensioners living in frontline areas of Ukraine have received cash assistance under a joint initiative of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the country’s Ministry of Social Policy and Pension Fund.
Over the past year, the WFP has transferred a total of more than 2 billion hryvnia – $48.5 million – to elderly Ukrainians living in regions designated by the government as areas of active or potential hostilities.
The program was launched in August 2023 to support pensioners who received less than 3,250 hryvnia ($81) per month. Now their social payments include a monthly bonus.
“Thanks to this project, it became possible to provide assistance to the most vulnerable elderly Ukrainians who could not arrange it on their own,” noted the First Deputy Minister of Social Affairs politics of Ukraine Daria Marchak.
“We know that before the war the country had effective social assistance systems, and this project is a clear example of how we can rely on them in “This is a difficult time to support the most vulnerable,” said WFP Country Director Richard Regan.
In addition to financial assistance, WFP is distributing food parcels to areas near the front lines inaccessible or too expensive for the population, and also supports daily hot meals for 90 thousand schoolchildren across the country.
In the Kharkov region, a UN agency is helping farmers and villagers resume agricultural work in safe conditions by clearing the land of ammunition.
In addition, WFP chartered 25 ships to export Ukrainian grain to countries in need as part of the Black Sea Grain Initiative and the Presidential Initiative “Grain from Ukraine” .
