UN Human Rights Council. UN Special Rapporteur on the right to housing to visit Uzbekistan Human Rights

UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing Balakrishnan Rajagopal will visit Uzbekistan from 19 to 30 August 2024.

Rajagopal will examine the protection and implementation of the right to housing in national law and practice, including housing availability, affordability and suitability, as well as protection mechanisms against forced evictions.

The Special Rapporteur will analyse the measures taken by the Government of Uzbekistan to ensure the right to adequate housing for all groups in the country. The expert will examine the impact of the climate crisis on the housing situation, as well as the possibility of citizen participation in decision-making on housing and urban development.

During his visit, Rajagopal will visit Tashkent, Jizzakh, Samarkand and Bukhara, as well as nearby areas, including student hostels and shelters for victims of domestic violence and homeless people. He will hold meetings with representatives of central and regional authorities, judges, civil society and the business community.

On 30 August, the Special Rapporteur will hold a press conference in Tashkent following his visit, and in March 2025, he will present a report on Uzbekistan to the UN Human Rights Council.
