President of the United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis completed a two-day official visit to Ukraine.
In Kyiv, the President of the General Assembly met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. He also held separate bilateral meetings with Verkhovna Rada Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets.
During the talks, the President of the General Assembly reiterated that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is a violation of the UN Charter and reaffirmed the General Assembly’s commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. Dennis Francis expressed hope that the outcome of the recent Ukraine Peace Summit would bring progress in the near future.
While in Kyiv, the President of the General Assembly visited the previously occupied territories of Borodyanka and Bucha, where he spoke with local residents. In Bucha, he visited the Church of St. Andrew the First-Called and took part in a candle-lighting ceremony in memory of the victims.
“I would like to think that Ukraine has already lived through its darkest night [in its modern history],” Dennis Francis said.
During his meetings, the President of the General Assembly stressed the need for the international community to continue to provide much-needed support to Ukraine, especially to protect civilians and critical infrastructure.
