Generative AI allows users to create a variety of content, including text, images, music and computer code. China leads in the number of patents in the field of generative AI, surpassing the United States six times over the past 10 years Sustainable Development Goals
China produces the largest number of patent applications in the field of generative artificial intelligence, significantly ahead of the other countries in the top five – the United States, South Korea, Japan and India. This is stated in a new report from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The authors of a WIPO report on the patent landscape in the field of generative AI report 54 thousand inventions registered between 2014 and 2023, with more than 25 percent of them in the last year. Since 2017, the number of patents has increased eightfold.
Generative AI allows users to create a variety of content, including text, images, music and computer code. A number of services operate on its basis, including chatbots ChatGPT, Google Gemini and ERNIE. As WIPO experts note, generative AI is already being used in industries such as life sciences, industrial manufacturing, transportation, security and telecommunications.
In the period from 2014 to 2023 In China, more than 38 thousand inventions in the field of generative AI were registered – six times more than in the United States, which ranks second in the number of patents. India, in fifth place, had the highest CAGR among the top five at 56 percent.
“Generative AI is a revolutionary technology that has the potential to change the way we live, work and play. By analyzing patenting data and trends, WIPO aims to improve understanding of where these rapidly evolving technologies are being developed and where they are heading,” said WIPO Director General Daren Tang.
“This will help policymakers guide the development of generative AI for the benefit of all and ensure that the interests of humanity remain at the center of innovation and creative ecosystems,” he added.
According to the report, application areas such as images and video dominate among generative AI technology patents, followed by text and audio (speech and music). The number of patents for technologies that use data on molecules, genes and proteins is growing rapidly, with an average annual growth rate of 78 percent over the past five years.
Top 10 companies filing patents patents received in the field of generative AI include Tencent (2,074 inventions), Ping An Insurance (1,564 inventions), Baidu (1,234), Chinese Academy of Sciences (607), IBM (601), Alibaba Group (571), Samsung Electronics (468), Alphabet (443), ByteDance (418) and Microsoft (377).
