The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by reports of violence in Kenya related to protests and street demonstrations. This is stated in a statement released by UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.

Protests against tax hikes have broken out in Kenya, according to media reports. On Tuesday, demonstrators broke into the parliament building and set it on fire. In response, the police used firearms. Several people died and dozens were injured.

“The Secretary-General is saddened by reports of deaths and injuries, including journalists and medical personnel,” the statement said. “He is also concerned about reports of targeted, arbitrary detentions.”

António Guterres stressed the need to respect the right to peaceful demonstration and urged Kenyan authorities to exercise restraint.

The Secretary General expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
