We must unite at the forefront of the fight against climate change because it is the fight of our lives. This was stated by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in his message on the occasion of World Meteorological Day, which is celebrated on March 23.

Catastrophic changes

The head of the UN recalled that the climate on our planet is undergoing catastrophic changes. The latest report on the state of the global climate says that new climate records are being set everywhere. In 2023, anomalies have become the new normal. The human consequences are clear: lives lost, livelihoods lost, economies destroyed.

“Climate chaos threatens every region, country and community on Earth,” Guterres said. “So we must all come together at the forefront of the fight against climate change—that’s the theme of this year’s World Meteorological Day—and start fighting for a better future.”

Adapt to the New realities

According to him, it is necessary to adapt to the realities of a changing climate and limit the damage from extreme weather events, including ensuring that by 2027 every person on Earth is protected through early warnings.

Climate justice must be ensured for developing countries, as they bear the least responsibility for the crisis. “Finally, we must build a future in which we end our dependence on fossil fuels and limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, avoiding complete reign of climate chaos,” said Antonio Guterres.

Transition to renewable sources

He added that the G20, which accounts for the largest emissions, should lead the global transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Developed countries must provide climate finance to developing countries, and business and finance must curb emissions and stop financing fossil fuels.

“We need citizens around the world to put pressure on governments and companies to act,” the UN chief urged. “This is the fight of our lives,” Guterres summed up his message.

World Meteorological Day

Every year on March 23, the entry into force of the Convention is celebrated, on the basis of which on this day The World Meteorological Organization was established in 1950.

World Meteorological Day was established to highlight the work of national meteorological and hydrological services, which make an important contribution to the safety and well-being of society .
